Forest Hills Considers Allowing Urban Farming

FOREST HILLS (KDKA) — Forest Hills is considering allowing people to raise chickens and bees, and the idea is creating quite a buzz.

Proponents of urban farming say it’s a great way to “go green” and to get fresh, organic food.

Opponents are worried about smells and even safety.

The proposal has some strict rules.

Bee colonies would have to be registered and licensed, and they would have to be a certain distance from a neighboring property.

Likewise, chicken owners would be limited to four hens. No roosters. The birds would have to be kept in a coop or fenced-in area.

Council voted Wednesday night to advertise the ordinance, a step they have to take before they can take a final vote.

That vote is possible in mid-June.
